PhD position in theoretical condensed matter in the field of nanomagnetism at the CFM in Donostia-San Sebastián. The PhD student will be hired under the National Programme for the Promotion of Talent and Its Employability of the Spanish MINECO.
Description: The PhD work will be focused on the study of the magnetism at the nanoscale, with
special emphasis on the spintronics, going from magnetic molecules to artificial engineered
nanostructures. The main objectives of the research will be: i) to acquire the knowledge and
skills required to properly simulate microscopic structures with DFT codes, including
molecules, heterostructures or impurities, ii) to analyze the electrical, magnetic and structural
properties of these systems, iii) to become familiar with different many body models and their
connection with points i) and ii), being able to extract observables of these systems, such as
the conductance or magnetization and, iv) the analysis and comparison with experiments.
The student will benefit from our collaborations with experimental groups and the excellent professional environment of the CFM, with plenty of visitors and seminars in the surrounding institutions, such as the CICNanogune, DIPC or the UPV/EHU. We also recommend the student to take part in some schools on related topics. In addition, we plan some research stays abroad in some collaborators’ group.
The work plan of the PhD student will include the following points: i) Simulation of magnetism
of nanosystems with DFT codes: structural, electronic and magnetic properties (comparison of different codes, importance of the basis set, description of the correlation functional, etc.) ii) Transport properties. Importance of the hybridization. Transport-related selfenergies and green functions. Non-collinear spins and spin-orbit interactions. iii) Connection to many body models. iV) Dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) codes. Application to local magnetic moments in interfaces.
Candidates must be in position of being enrolled in a PhD program for the course 2016/2017 at the moment of signing the contract. In other words, students with undergraduate degree, who have accumulated in the course of their official university studies a minimum of 300 ECTS credits (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System), of which at least 60 must be at the Master’s degree level. It would be up to the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU to determine, in accordance with its specific rules and regulations, both the equivalences between LRU credits (from previous qualifications) and ECTS credits, and the assessment criteria for the 60 ECTS credits that (at least) should be considered Master level credits in order to qualify holders for acceptance.
