A pre-doctoral research position is available to work on the electrical characterization of
Engineered Conductive Proteins for Bioelectronics (eProt)
at the Department of Applied Physics, University of Alicante, Spain
The increasing demand for wearable and implantable electronics requires the design and synthesis of biocompatible conductive materials. Proteins, the building blocks of life, are structurally robust and inherently biocompatible, raising interest in the engineering of protein-based functional materials. However, the electrical conduction properties of these systems are still far from those of the materials which are typically used in electronics. Together with a multidisciplinary consortium of researchers we aim to fabricate protein-based materials suitable for their application in electronics.
The tasks of the PhD candidate will include the electrical characterization of the biomaterials produced by our partners, both a) at the macroscopic level, in protein films, and b) at the microscopic level, using Scanning Probe techniques for the study of conduction at single and few protein systems.
Suitable candidates should have a master degree in Physics, Engineering, Chemistry or related fields. Experience in the electrical characterization of materials would be valued.
The candidate will work under the direct supervision of Dr. Reyes Calvo (https://sites.google.com/gcloud.ua.es/q2dua) and Dr. Carlos Sabater (https://cvnet.cpd.ua.es/curriculum-breve/es/sabater-piqueres-carlos/196461), who hold a broad expertise in the electrical characterization of materials and nanoscale systems. As part of the Nanophysics and the Condensed Matter research areas of the Department of Applied Physics, we enjoy a collaborative and vibrant research atmosphere in condensed matter physics, materials science, nanoelectronics, optics experimental groups and theory groups. We have access to all necessary equipment for device fabrication and electrical characterization of materials and nanoscale systems at room and low temperatures. Further details on our ongoing research are available at https://dfapl.ua.es/es/materia-condensada.html
To apply please send your complete CV and a cover letter to eprotUA@gmail.com. Deadline for application for this specific position is April 15th 2021, but applications from highly motivated candidates are always encouraged.
