Deadline: February 15th 2020

The Faculty of Physics, Mathematics and Computer Science at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz is inviting applications for the position of an
Assistant Professor for Experimental Solid State Physics with a focus on Spin Physics (W1 with tenure-track to a W2 position; LBesG)

We are looking for a scientist with a research record in a topical field of experimental spin physics relevant to solid state systems to join our faculty at the earliest possible date. In particular, we expect active participation in the Collaborative Research Centre TRR173 Spin+X, the recently granted Centre “TopDyn- Dynamics and Topology”, the BMBF MagSens Centre and ideally other coordinated research projects. A collaboration with partners such as groups in the Institute of Physics, the Department of Chemistry, as well as within the Rhine-Main Universities Alliance and with TU Kaiserslautern is expected.

Spin-related research is a very successful research focus at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) with excellent infrastructure available (technology platform with nanoscale fabrication and characterization, spectroscopy, Helium liquefier for low temperature experiments, etc.) and a number of coordinated research projects, which offer opportunities for collaborations that are strongly encouraged. Furthermore, an active participation in the application for future projects is expected. The successful applicant is expected to develop an active research program in selected aspects of spin physics that fit the overall profile of our activities in this area and, in particular, in the Collaborative Research Centre TRR173 Spin+X.

Commitment to teaching relevant courses at the Institute of Physics and an active involvement in academic administration is expected. Teaching at the Master of Physics level is done in English and candidates are expected to have the necessary language skills. The willingness to learn German to be able to teach in German at the latest after the final evaluation is also expected.

The professorship is funded by the Tenure-Track program of the German federal and state governments. Scientists in the early stages of their careers are therefore especially encouraged to apply. In addition to the general employment requirements, applicants must meet the recruitment requirements stipulated in Section 54 of the Hochschulgesetz of Rhineland-Palatinate.

Assistant professors will be initially appointed as civil servants for a fixed period of three years. After a successful interim evaluation, the employment contract is usually extended for another three years. After this period, the position will be converted to a tenured professorship (W2), provided the holder of the position meets the relevant regulations of higher education law (final evaluation procedure) as well as the general legal requirements.
The State of Rhineland-Palatinate and Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz are committed to close personal mentoring for students and, therefore, expect a strong presence of teaching staff at the university. A cooperative and team-oriented work attitude, outstanding communication skills, and the willingness to take on responsibility – including further professional development in accordance with JGU’s leadership guidelines – is therefore expected.

JGU aims to increase the quota of women in science, and hence encourages female scientists to apply.
Applicants with disability with appropriate qualifications will be given preference.
