Electronic correlations in moiré heterostructures: the ABC trilayer graphene/hBN

Since the discovery of insulating and superconducting states in magic angle twisted bilayer graphene, moiré heterostructures have emerged as incredibly tunable platforms to study the electronic correlations and their relation with superconductivity. At the heart of the discussion about the nature of these states it is whether the local correlations, which drive Mott insulating states and electron localization, play any role in these systems. Mott physics and local correlations are essential to explain the phenomenology of cuprates and other strongly correlated superconductors. A particularly interesting system to study such a role is the ABC trilayer graphene, as the moiré pattern can be switched on and off through the alignment with the substrate hBN. In the talk I will discuss the effects produced by Mott physics on the band structure and the ordered states of ABC trilayer/hBN, as a way to advance towards a solution of this controversy.
