Complex oxides present an unparalleled wealth of physical phenomena as a function of subtle variations of their their precise composition and structure. Nanoscale oxides introduce additional control parameters such as proximity effects, access to surface contributions and novel interfaces with either the vacuum or a different nanomaterial. Indeed, oxide interfaces are inherently exciting entities in nanoscale condensed matter due to the intrinsically unknown nature of the contact surface of two materials. The discovery of the 2D electron gas at the interface between the band insulators LaAlO3 and SrTiO3 in 20041 sparked a frantic research activity to deepen the understanding of this phenomenon and search for novel systems presenting unexpected properties in the fields of magnetism, ferro- and piezoelectricity, superconductivity or photonics at interfaces, domain walls and the oxide surface itself.
Consequently, research on oxide interfaces has witnessed an impressive progress over the last 10 years. This mini-colloquium aims at reviewing the progress made in this topic, present the most recent investigations, and motivate open and constructive discussion on the prospects in this field by bringing together top scientist from multiple disciplines in the fields of thin film growth and norganic chemistry, experts in magnetism, superconductivity, spintronics, ferroelectricity and photonics, among others, and specialists on nanocharacterization techniques, such as electron and local probe microscopies, synchrotron radiation, etc.
Some Topics of interest are:
– Advanced growth and synthesis techniques.
– Novel oxide interface properties.
– Distinct properties of oxide domain walls.
– Advanced characterization techniques of oxide interfaces.
– Oxide-metal interfaces.
– Theoretical modeling of oxide interfaces.
– Oxide interfaces as devices
