We seek two highly motivated students with a strong knowledge of solid state physics and an appetite for experimental work. You have a desire to perform cutting edge research, and enjoy sharing your ideas and results with others.

The project will focus on newly predicted Dirac and Weyl semimetals, and their topological properties. Using high magnetic fields and high pressures, you will explore their optical spectra.

You will be working within a small team, in close collaboration with theorists and fellow experimentalists from around the world.

You are the holder of a masters degree in physics or material science. You speak English at a high level. Knowledge of French or German is a plus. Experience with cryogenic equipment and high vacuums are a plus. The ability to create and nurture collaboration is highly beneficial.

We offer a four-year PhD position in an excellent research environment, with a highly competitive salary. You will participate in summer schools and international conferences, and occasionally travel to research facilities in Switzerland and abroad. The research group is located in the Physics Department at the University of Fribourg, in the midst of Swiss Alps.

The positions will start in January 2018. Interested students should contact Ana Akrap (ana.akrap@unige.ch), with a letter of motivation, a CV and with the names of two references.
